Students will benefit more from the other writing assignments if they are able to write a basic sentence. I recommend getting as far as the compound sentence activities before beginning on the first assignments that follow the books.
From there on, follow the balance of The Sentence Book activities in parallel with the other writing assignments. This will mean completing some writing assignments, and then a return to more advanced sentence structures. The precise order does not matter, so mix them in a way that works for you.
The activities in The Sentence Book can all be tackled by a small group of students, discussing options, inspiring each other. There are plenty of activities in each section; use as many of them as you consider necessary for your students. You may choose to reserve some for testing purposes, individually, to ensure that the concepts are secure.
